THE LILLIAN CHUMNEY LINEAGE The parents of Lillian Chumney were Florence Effie Sharp and William Thomas Hodges Born William Moses Isaacs. How I discovered that William Thomas Hodges was adopted and his birth family Isaacs By Eddie Chumney In 1. I gained a curiousity about researching my family history. From 1. 99. 5 2. I spent much time researching family history. All that I knew about my grandfather my mothers father William Thomas Hodges was that he was born in Wales as I had seen a picture of him laying around the house and on the back it said Wales. Because of my studies into the Hebraic Roots of Christianity, I began to wonder if my grandfather was Jewish. As a result, I visited my Uncle Bob Hodges at his home in Wadsworth, OH in 1. My mom didnt know much about her father and mother as she went to a foster home in Millersburg, Holmes County, OH when she was just a young child. My only possibility to learn about my mothers father side of the family was through my Uncle Bob. I didnt tell my Uncle Bob why I was asking questions about his father and my grandfather. After Uncle Bob was sharing on what he knew about his father for about an hour or so, a decision was made that it was time to eat dinner. So, we went out to a restaurant. After we had ordered our meals but before we were served, my Uncle Bob turned to me and said the following. We dont know for sure but we do think that there is a possibility that your grandfather may have been Jewish. We have what we believe to be his original birth certificate where it shows that he would have been born William Moses Isaacs on November 2. Glamorgan, Wales. THE INVESTIGATION This caused me to want to know for sure if this was my grandfather. At this time, I joined a UK genealogy group on the internet. I made contact with someone from the group who had a CD that contained the surnames of people who live in England and Wales. I asked him to tell me how many Isaacs there were in Wales. He gave me a list of 5. Of those 5. 9 families, 3. Glamorgan, Wales which is the place where my Uncle Bob believed that my grandfather was born. On December 2. 2, 1. I wrote letters to all 5. Isaac families in Wales and explained to them that I was trying to find relatives of a William Moses Isaacs who is the son of Samuel and Ann Isaacs. I got a reply from 4 people. THE DISCOVERY OF MY ISAACS FAMILY IN WALESTwo people told me thanks for the inquiry but that they were not related to William Moses Isaacs and Samuel Isaacs. I got two positive responses. One letter came from the grandson of Solomon Isaacs, the son of Samuel and Ann Isaacs. His name is William Norris Isaacs. In his letter post stamped Jan 3, 1. Solomon Isaacs. The other letter was dynamite. It was from the granddaughter of Albert Isaacs, the son of Samuel and Ann Isaacs. Her name is Janet Collier. It just so happens that she was interested in doing research on the Isaacs family also. In the initial reply letter to me dated January 3, 1. Janet Collier wrote the following. Dear Eddie, I feel I can call you that as we are second cousinsI was at my parents home when your letter arrived. I was particularly pleased because I have been researching my family history too. My father Victor Samuel Isaacs is the son of Albert Isaacs. So your mother and my dad would be first cousins My father remembers William, Uncle Will as he calls him My father also recalls that there was a tragic accident when Williams wife was killed while rescuing their son from the path of an oncoming train. The son lost both legs. Comment from Eddie Actually got his feet cut off Apparently, the railroad was very close to their home. Dad remembers newspaper clippings being sent to them but sadly there is no trace of these now. Dad recalls that William was adopted. THE CONFIRMATION THAT MY WILLIAM THOMAS HODGES WAS ADOPTEDFrom talking to my Uncle Bob, he had told me about the train accident. It happened in 1. He told me that it was in the front page of the Akron Beacon Journal Akron, OH. Because this was my FIRST correspondence with Janet Collier and she told me about the train accident then I knew that there was a connection. Furthermore, Janet communicated that her dad remembers that William was adopted. I was excited I had found the birth family of my grandfather. My Uncle Bob told me that William Moses Isaacs was raised by a Thomas Hodges and went by the name William Thomas Hodges. In researching the life of Thomas Hodges, I learned that he died in 1. Akron, OH and left a Will in Akron, Summit County, OH. When I got the Will, it mentioned, My adopted son, William. I now had all the confirming evidence that I needed to realize that my grandfather, William Thomas Hodges, was born William Moses Isaacs in Glamorgan, Wales on November 2. Greenbriar Picture Shows.
